FNA holding meetings on grain company

Initial interest in a farmer owned grain-handling and fertilizer company have been strong.

Farmers of North America Spokesman Bob Friesen says the FNA Grain proposal got at least $30 million in interest in the first 14 days, and based on that they are now holding producer information meetings across the Prairies.

“Farmers are engaging in a good discussion about this,” he said. “Most levels of government have always said over the years that farmers have far more market power when we have value added in the agriculture industry, but unless farmers own part of that value add, they don’t accrue the benefits.”

Here in Saskatchewan, meetings have already been held in Biggar, Kindersley, Eston, Leader and Cabri with more planned this week in southern Saskatchewan.

“You have to recognize that this is the absolute worst time of year to do this, but we’re under a timeline that isn’t of our own doing, and we need to look at this urgently,” Friesen added.

Today’s meetings are 9:00am this morning at the K-Motel in Swift Current, 1:00pm this afternoon at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre in Shaunavon and at 7:00pm tonight at Casey Hall in Ponteix. There will also be meetings in Hodgeville, Gravelbourg, and Assiniboia tomorrow, and Moose Jaw, Davidson and Hanley on Friday.
